St Luke's Theatre Society Productions 2008

  • March 2008

  • Harvey by Mary Chase - Directed by Jerry Lowley

The well-known and loved tale of Elwood P. Dowd and his illusionary rabbit Harvey will be familiar to many as a black and white film starring Jimmy Stewart. A wonderfully entertaining playwriting effort by Mary Chase featuring a cast of 12 diverse characters the essential scene changes are designed for us by talented Una Hollingworth. Something not to be missed as our opening play for 2008.

    Performances: 8pm - Friday 7th, Saturday 8th, Monday 10th, Wednesday 12th, Friday 14th & Saturday 15th.
    Matinees: 2pm - Saturday 8th, Sunday 16th.

  • April 2008

    Greenroom Production

A rehearsed and fully staged Play-Reading.

    Performances: 7:30pm - Friday 18th & Saturday 19th.
    Matinee: 1:30pm - Saturday 19th.

  • June 2008

Shock Tactics by John Dole - Directed by Trevor Bond

Here the leading character is Fred a homebuilt computer who all but ruins the courtship of the daughter of the house with his somewhat uncontrollable remarks. But Fred has another more worthy skill in that he can accurately foretell the weather. This attracts the attention of none other than the assistant in charge of Mist and Drizzle from the Met. Bureau. Need we say more? Another of this writer's great comedy successes.

    Performances: 8pm - Friday 13th, Saturday 14th, Monday 16th, Wednesday 18th, Friday 20th & Saturday 21st.
    Matinees: 2pm - Saturday 14th & 21st.

  • August 2008

The Cemetery Club by Ivan Menchell - Directed by Sharon White

Ida, Lucille and Doris form a club that meets every month in Ida's house for tea and then trundles off to the cemetery to remember the good times and gossip with their late husbands. They attract the interest of a widower on a similar mission and he changes their lives forever. This touching play about three superannuates is funny, wise and gloriously witty.

    Performances: 8pm - Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd, Monday 25th, Wednesday 27th, Friday 29th & Saturday 30th.
    Matinees: 2pm - Saturday 23rd & 30th.

  • September 2008

    Greenroom Production

A Variety Show, featuring Down Came a Jumbuck by Australian writer Ian Austin. The theme of the supporting items will be Australian and as a Theatre Social event for members and friends will have light refreshments provided all for the small sum of $6. Booking for Catering only 3844.7257

    Performances: 7.30pm - Friday 19th & Saturday 20th.
    Matinee: 1:30pm - Saturday 20th.

  • November 2008

Me and Thee by Charles Horine - Directed by David Cole.

The plot concerns an architect doomed by an unkind fate, to designing only bathrooms. In this frustrated atmosphere the Uni. student son's behaviour seems so foreign (read stressed) to the parents that they feel impelled to employ a psychiatrist to sort him out. An unlikely twist results m the parents becoming the patients instead. Complications galore ensue, but everyone winds up in his/her proper place by the final curtain. A hoot of a play!

    Performances:  8pm - Friday 21st, Saturday 22nd, Monday 24th, Wednesday 26th, Friday 28th & Saturday 29th.
    Matinees: 2pm - Saturday 22nd & 29th.

About St Luke's

The Society has enjoyed over 50 years of successful operation. Its venue is the Anglican Church Hall of St Luke's at Ekibin Rd east, opposite the junction of Sexton St, Annerley (or Tarragindi.)

Auditions are not held. Instead, we present rehearsed and staged play-readings over a particular weekend where the potential of an aspiring member can be assessed. Four major plays (comedies being the most popular choice) are presented each year and new members who have shown promise are given roles along with the main established actors.

Guest directors are invited into the yearly program to keep the standard high and we attract good audiences. Each play season runs for 8 performances including 2 matinees.

From profits, exceedingly generous donations are directed to as many as 30 charities, and include World Vision and Smith Family Sponsorship and local and overseas charities.

The hall has been set up as a theatre venue that attracts other fund-raisers who benefit from our discount offers for Block Bookings of 20+. Parking is accessible both in the grounds and nearby streets. The hall is a 7 minute drive from the City Centre, a phone is installed for patrons' use and buses pass the door.

New members are encouraged to offer to be involved in Front of House work (ushering, selling at our charity stall etc.)
The group is ecumenical and friendly, with all ages involved with the many aspects of theatre. Our activities are geared to presenting a top quality family entertainment at an extremely reasonable price.
