Across the river from Brisbane's CBD, South Brisbane includes
South Bank with its
restaurants, playgrounds, gardens and artificial beach, The Queensland
Performing Arts Complex (QPAC), the
Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), and the Queensland Museum & ScienceCentre. you
can enjoy a walk along the riverfront boardwalk or through the
bougainvillea-clad Arbour.
Education facilities include the Conservatorium of Music and
Southbank TAFE. Cinemas
and more restaurants are behind South Bank on Stanley Street.
At the eastern end of South Brisbane, the Goodwill
Bridge provides pedestrian and cycle access across the river to the
Brisbane Botanic Gardens and the QUT Gardens Point campus. Victoria
Bridge carries pedestrian and road traffic across to Queen Street Mall
in the city centre. To the west, the William Jolly Bridge (aka the Grey
Street Bridge) crosses to Milton and the top end of North Quay.
South Brisbane is very well connected by public transport. The
South East busway stations of the Cultural Centre, South Brisbane and
Mater Hill have high-frequency buses that run towards the city and
outbound to
Eight Mile Plains. South
Brisbane and South Bank Railway Stations are five minutes away from
central. Ferry and Citycat services link South Bank Parklands to the CBD, the
university upstream at
Saint Lucia and downriver to
Hamilton.
South Bank was developed for the 1988 World Expo.
