North Stradbroke Island (Straddie)
Watching the Dolphins catching waves, a giant Manta Ray gliding just
beneath the surface and Turtles bobbing in the surf we realised just how
much we would have missed without Dave, owner-operator of
Straddie Kingfisher Tours
on our 6 hour
Straddie Daily Discovery Tour.
For locals, Straddie is just a quick drive to Cleveland (35mins from Brisbane
CBD - less off the Gateway Arterial), park the car and catch the Straddie Flyer
across to Dunwich. There are quick introductions with fellow travellers and we
set off in the back of the 4 wheel drive for a tour and potted history of
Dunwich. It soon becomes clear that our barefoot, 6'1" tanned guide knows and
loves his island well.
We drove down tracks that only a 4WD can manage to Brown Lake for a
paddle, along the sandy beach bordering the Pacific Ocean then stop at
the "Keyholes" - a series of beautiful freshwater lakes for a swim and
cup of tea. Next it's up to Point Lookout where we walk out to the Gorge
and Dave points out exactly where to look for those dolphins and
turtles. The Manta Ray was a bonus. Then it's back along the beach to
paddle or swim while our BBQ lunch cooks - restaurants just don't come
with views like this. Even better we get to walk along the beach while
someone else clears the table.
There's enough time left for a tour of Amity Point fishing village and then
it's back to Dunwich to catch the water taxi home.
This tour a great way to get to know the island - a highly recommended way to
start your holiday on Straddie, but also a good day out for groups, couples and
singles. Dave's 4WD takes up to 10 - but one would have to be thinner than me.
On our day, we had 6 and there was more than enough room.
Could we have done the same on our own with a car? No way. The best
spots are only accessible with a 4WD vehicle and experienced driver - AND you
need someone who knows where and when to look. Got your own 4WD?
Follow Dave and get great tips driving on sand with a
tag-along tour.
Dave recommends you take: Sunscreen, comfortable clothing and swimming
costumes, sunglasses, hat, towel and camera. I'd add thongs (flip-flops) and a
water bottle. Contact Dave at
Straddie Kingfisher Tours for this and other sightseeing and fishing tours
on North Stradbroke Island and Moreton Island.
