  • August - Queensland State School Celebrations has the opening and closing dates of schools throughout Queensland and Queensland school anniversaries coming up in the next four years. There's lots of information to help organisers of anniversaries too. Check to see if your old school is due to celebrate its anniversary. 
     
  • August - Solar House Day - cool designs, hot ideas  Tour energy efficient homes - talk to the owners and feel the comfort. Solar House Day in September aims to demonstrate how simple it is to build or renovate a home that requires virtually no heating or cooling other than that provided freely by the sun and our environment.
     
  • July - Antony Green's Election Guide - Explore Antony Green's A to Z of facts, history and trivia about every electorate in Australia.   • July - Maternity Coalition Online Petition urging action on the current problems faced by women in regard to maternity services offered in Australia today. Australia has one of the highest rates of caesarean section births in the world.
     
  • June - Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia is a not-for-profit charitable service providing aeromedical emergency and primary health care services together with communication and education assistance to people who live, work and travel in regional and remote Australia. Check the website for history, employment opportunities, real life stories and advice for travellers.
     
  • June - Daintree Rainforest Land Trust Australia has lost 84% of its once-sweeping rainforests in the few years since colonization by the British. Its unique wildlife, that dates back before the extinction of the dinosaurs, is restricted to ever-smaller areas of the island continent. Without immediate action, the Daintree Rainforest and its 110 million year history will soon be lost as well. Visit the site for more information.
      
  • June - AUSTCARE - Australians Caring for Refugees. With the current changes in technology and the tightening financial situation the AUSTCARE Board has made a decision to close all State Offices.  All offices, except Queensland have closed. The Queensland office will close by 30 June, 2004. All fund raising and community awareness programs will become centralised.   • May - John Clarke and Bryan Dawe present their satirical take on the week's events on the ABC's 7.30 Report. You can also see them, hear them, read the transcripts online and relive the best moments. There's a new one every Thursday.
     
  • May - Australian Culture and Recreation is an index of over 2,900 government and non-government websites about Australia's culture and recreation. You can search and browse by location, category and audience.  
      
  • May - 100 Not Out - An online exhibition of some of the most memorable moments from the past 100 years of Queensland's sporting heritage. Brought to you by the State Library of Queensland.
      
  • April - ABC Australian Short Story for Radio Project WIn $650 and have your story produced on radio. You must live in a regional area of Australia - or Darwin and Hobart. This page includes text and audio of 2003 winners - listen to them even if you don't intend to enter.
     
  • April - Australia Post - one of those useful websites that have you wondering what we did before the internet. We use the postage calculator and postcode search a lot. Did you know that you can get your own personalised postage stamps?
      
  • April - Electronic Frontiers Australia Inc. (EFA) is a non-profit national organisation representing Internet users concerned with on-line freedoms and rights. EFA members and supporters come from all parts of Australia and from diverse backgrounds. They are people who recognise that preserving freedoms and rights always depends on the willingness of people to defend them and that combatting the threats posed by the anti-civil libertarian forces, the radical right agenda and ill-informed reports in the media requires constant vigilance and support.
      
  • February - ABC Brisbane 612 ABC - find out what's on when, read transcripts of interviews and the history of 612, put faces to voices and read biographies of presenters and check out the famous Studio 408 WEBCAM. You'll even find recipes and garden tips. 
     
  • February -  Weebl and Bob You'll either love them or hate them. Go to the episodes on the right hand menu, turn the sound on your computer and enter the world of Weebl and Weebl's friend Bob. It's beyond description.
      
  • February - Identifont is a really useful site when you need to identify a font used on a printout or image. The site takes you through a series of questions until it finds the matching font. And if you're looking for symbols, search by keyword and you'll be presented with matching fonts. There are free fonts for download and other fonts you can buy. Fascinating site.
      
  • January - ON LINE focus - Qld Election 2004 is an ambitious attempt to increase political discussion and debate and make politicians more accountable.
    The site provides links to a detailed listing of all electorates and candidates. You can search by either electorate or candidate. Candidate information is maintained and updated by candidates themselves. 
    You can also complete a confidential questionnaire for qualitative research into voters' attitudes conducted by On Line Opinion in collaboration with Griffith and Queensland Unis. The results are analysed and publicised as well as emailed directly to candidates. It's a good way to make sure they are paying attention. 
    All the seats have background information and analysis by David Fraser whose authoritative knowledge of Queensland elections is based on his participation in every state redistribution since 1977.   
  • January -  Tim Flannery Australia Day Address 2002 The day, the land, the people. A thoughtful reflection on Australia's past, present and where we are heading. Perhaps even more relevant today than it was two years ago. You'll find more Australia Day speeches here     
  • January - Leapzine is a website dedicated to leap babies - those who were born on the 29th February. Interesting facts, ideas, advice, poetry, honor roll and ideas for your birthday party this year.

  • November - The Brisbane Apollo Male Choir Inc (BAMCInc) sang its first public concert in Brisbane in 1885 after two years of discussion and preparation. The present male choir attempts to maintain the standard set in previous years and is actively recruiting new members. And yes, that's 1885, almost 120 years ago.  
  • November - The Triton Foundation is a national, not-for-profit organisation founded by George Lewin, inventor of the Australian icon - the Triton Work Bench. This site is full of essential information if you are serious about developing your inventions on a commercial basis.   
  • November - Australia's Open Garden Scheme promotes the knowledge and pleasure of gardens and gardening across Australia by opening Australia's best private gardens to the public. Since 1987, the Scheme's garden owners have donated more than $2 million to charity. You'll also find information about funding available through the Community Garden Grants program.
  • October - Maternity Coalition Massive savings in health care costs and improved maternity services would be made by returning the care of healthy pregnant women to medically-qualified midwives rather than obstetricians. By better use of the midwifery workforce, a saving of an estimated at $200 Million could be made to the federal health budget annually, according to Maternity Coalition.   
  • October - The 22nd Homebirth Australia Conference: Homebirth 2003: The Personal is the Political will be held in Canberra on November 1 & 2 2003. Stories from the famous and not so famous include George Negus, Senator Aden Ridgeway, ACT MLA Kerrie Tucker, Midwife Vicki Chan and many more.    
  • October - Institute of International Studies University of California, Berkeley has two public resources: Conversations with History a series of fascinating and thoughtful interviews where distinguished men and women from all over the world talk about their lives and their work, and the Sanford S. Elberg Lectures in streaming video. 
  • September - Queensland Writers Festival is held every year in Brisbane. See the site for the program and a list of participants for this year from October 1st to 5th.  
  • September - Talk like a Pirate Day was September 19th. If you missed it there's plenty of time to practice for next year - or for when you see Pirates of the Caribbean.      
  • September - Meet-up find or arrange gatherings in your city - it's a great way to meet people and make new friends. There are 2550 members in Brisbane. Why not join one - or start your own?
  • August - Metafuture.org If you've missed Sohail Inayatullah at the Ideas at the Powerhouse 2003 - or if you've been and want more - check this site for articles, interviews and links.   
  • August - Lakeside International Raceway. The future of the Lakeside Raceway has become a highly contentious issue in the Pine Rivers community. Views range from those who would like to see the full range of motor sports return to Lakeside to those who would be happy to see the track removed and the site turned into general parkland. This page has links to various stakeholders. Check the supporters sites for old photos and history.   
  • August - Story Place: Indigenous Art of Cape York and the Rainforest exhibition at the Queensland Art Gallery is the realisation of more than two years research and collaboration between the Queensland Art Gallery and the Indigenous people of Cape York. It brings together more than 300 historical and contemporary works of art sculpture, painting, works on paper, ceramic, fibre and ceremonial objects by more than 80 artists.
  • July - The Blenders this Gold Coast Barbershop Harmony Club with over 80 active singing members performed at the International Barbershop Convention in Montreal this month and will be at the Australian National Barbershop Convention in Perth in October 2003. Click on the CD sales link to download samples, including some Australian classics (Road to Gundagai, Waltzing Matilda etc) in mp3 format.  
  • July - idealist.org - Action Without Borders some fascinating articles, discussions and resources for people who want to make a difference in their local or global community.    
  • July - young2retire.com was created to help you explore alternatives to retirement and start designing the life you want.  How will you translate your maturity, experience and unique gifts into a life worth living? This is a US site, and of course there's a book, but the ideas can apply anywhere and there a good links page.
  • June - Suncorp Stadium (previously known as Lang Park) The site includes architects impressions, ticket information, a seating plan, history and facts & figures. Did you know that the new Stadium has 47 kilometres of timber battens and 10,000m2 of glass?  
  • June - Ideas at the Powerhouse 2003 The Ideas Program is available now online and in print. With over 50 speakers and nearly 80 sessions, the Brisbane Powerhouse will be brimming with Ideas for four days commencing on 14 August. The full Ideas program is open to all and mostly free. Choose which sessions and speakers interest you, grab your colleagues or mates and drop in, or block out the four days to immerse yourself.   
  • June - Port of Brisbane Visitors' Centre on Fisherman Islands, is  purpose-built to host visits by individuals, tour groups, schools and community organisations. You can wander through the static and interactive display area and learn about the operations of a working port. If you want to explore further you can also take part in a tour of the port.
  • May - Nonprofit Good Practice Guide - useful website to help manage your nonprofit organization effectively. Includes articles, standards of practice, resources and glossaries.
  • May - History of Places in Australia is an ambitious project which encourages local communities to produce websites and aims to link to them all.
  • May - SunSteam Inc. - is a volunteer group that operates mainline steam train tours using steam locomotives and wooden carriages from the Queensland Rail heritage fleet. You can find details of tours in South-East Queensland using a navigation system based on the old-style QR rail tickets.
  • April - "Convict Creations - The hidden story of Australia's missing links." A quirky and irreverent view of Australia and its history, culture and sport.  
  • April - In the Artists Footprints - a site about the lives and works of Australian Artists and the social environments in which they lived and painted. See artists and their work, listen to online lectures and check gallery details if you want to see the original works.   
  • April - Anzac Day - Excellent New Zealand site includes photographs, paintings, biographies, maps, details of memorials, list of fatalities and view of the changing nature and meaning of Anzac Day. More Anzac links can be found on our what's on page under April 25
  • March - ABC News Online Special Presentation - Iraq Crisis complete coverage up-to-date and in-depth coverage of the war  
  • March - Nightlife with Tony Delroy news, current affairs, lifestyle and entertainment plus the famous challenge - favourite of nightowls (like us) all around Australia. You can listen to the program and earlier interviews online (Windows Media format)   
  • March - Apelogic for those days when nothing goes right with your computer. Wait for it to load, press OK and click on the weapon of choice (the mug is our favourite). 
  • February - Common Dreams News Centre - in-depth news reports and critical analysis from a variety of quality sources.    
  • February - Reuters Alertnet includes a live news feed from Reuters together with articles describing how relief agencies are responding to the latest humanitarian crises and a member directory of international aid agencies.    
  • February - AskNow! is a collaborative service provided by the Council of Australian State Libraries, the state and territory libraries of Australia and the National Library to provide a [Mon-Fri] virtual reference desk where answers are provided immediately by librarians expertly searching library catalogues, databases and the Internet. Available Australia-wide
  • January - Australia Day Cockroach Races - the 22nd annual competition at the Story Bridge Hotel. All funds raised in this event from the buying or entering of cockroaches go to the Mater Children's Hospital. More information and plenty of cockroaches on the website   
  • January - The National Pioneer Women's Hall of Fame is dedicated to preserving the place of women in history and their special contribution to Australia's heritage. This virtual museum complements the real museum in Alice Springs.  
  • January - The Complete Bushfire Safety Book website contains an indication of the valuable advice given in this widely-acclaimed book.  The book is available from major bookstores and online.  See BCL Bookstores.   • December - WebExhibits produces novel exhibits to help improve cultural literacy by promoting online exhibits about the links between art and science.   • December - AbilityHub.com has information for people with a physical or learning disability who find operating a computer difficult, maybe even impossible. Adaptive equipment and alternative methods available for accessing computers and the Internet.  
  • December - Christmas links from the State Library of Qld - while you're there check out some of the activities, exhibitions and cartooning workshops coming up.
  • November - The World War Two Nominal Roll was created to honour and commemorate the men and women who served in Australia's defence forces and the Merchant Navy during this conflict. You can search service record details by specifying name, service number, honours, place (of birth, of enlistment, or residential locality at enlistment).  
  • November - Australians for Just Refugee Programs We aim to achieve just and compassionate treatment of refugees, consistent with the human rights standards which Australia has developed and endorsed.  
  • November - The Queensland Government E-Democracy Unit is responsible for introducing live Internet broadcasts of Parliamentary proceedings (late 2002), E-Petitions for the electronic lodgement and joining of petitions (see current e-petitions here) and conducting community consultation online (late 2002)
  • October - Bali Bombing - ABC News online special provides full coverage of the bombings and the aftermath   
  • October - Online Conversion - convert just about anything - temperatures, clothing sizes, numbers, distances, cooking (1 drop = 0.105263 pinch) or so they say. 
  • October - Altavista Babelfish automatically translates blocks of texts or web pages to and from English, French, German, Spanish, Portugese, Russian, Italian, Japanese, Korean & Chinese. It's a useful tool that sometimes produces comical results.
  • September - SodaPlay "The home of creative play" is a seriously addictive website which lets you create and change models that can take on a life and personality of their own. 
  • September - The Official Rex the Runt website - a must for fans. Rex the Runt videos are available from BlackStar 
  • September - Museum Treasures CD Series a series of CDs on museums around Australia. As well as major museum attractions in capital cities, CDs include smaller museums in small country towns. Produced by enthusiastic museum hunters eager to share their excitement with other museum appreciators.
  • August - BookCrossing.com urges readers to "release books into the wild", complete with bookplate to urge finders to return to BookCrossing and register their find - before releasing the book again. According to the website, there are 9 books in the wild in Brisbane right now. 
  • August -  The Heritage of Queensland: Explore Your Own Backyard. ABC Radio in Queensland in conjunction with the Queensland Heritage Trails Network is producing 175 radio segments, on the subject of Queensland's unique natural history experience - past, present and future.   
  • August - Bullies Down Under - the website of SAEBOW (South Australian Employees Bullied Out of Work) "Bullying is escalating in workplaces throughout Australia and New Zealand, thriving on denial, misinformation, myth and the silencing of those who try to speak out." This site aims to give information and support.
  • July - The Community Web Publishing Project (CWPP) is an initiative of the State Library of Queensland to encourage the publication of quality Queensland community information on the Internet. The Project recognises the wealth of information and services that non-profit organisations provide for local communities.  
  • July -  Moggill Koala Hospital - Caring for sick, injured and orphaned koalas is one of the groups that have benefited from the Community Web Publishing Project  
  • July - Brisbane Insects and Spiders produced by the Chew's family. They say: "Our interest is to study insects and spiders in our local area in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. We go to the bush on weekends to watch and study insects and spiders."
  • June - Australian Bureau of Statistics.  The 2001 census data is now available
  • June - Transparency International  is an international non-governmental organisation which aims to combat corruption and bring civil society, business, and governments together in a powerful global coalition.
  • June - On a more local level, The Queensland Integrity Commissioner provides advice to senior decision makers within the government, on conflict of interest matters. 
  • May - Search for Australian Place Names locate any town in Australia. Try "As the Cocky Flies" to calculate the distance between any two Australian places "as the Cocky Flies" and a quick lesson on calculating the shortest distance between two points on a sphere.
  • May - Wilkins Tourist Maps has lots of maps of Australian regions and cities - for personal use only.  
  • May - The Other Brisbane! The town of 4000 people just south of San Francisco is sister city to our own. Check out the Brisbane Chamber of Commerce, brisbaneusa.com and the official City of Brisbane web site.
  • March - IPS Radio & Space Services: Interesting Facts and Educational Material has short articles on topics including the sun, sunspots, solar flares, the solar cycle meteors, space weather - and even tells us how the date of Easter is calculated.  
  • March - Education Queensland's Education and Training Reforms for the Future includes a proposal to extend the years of compulsory schooling - and the opportunity to have your say. An important part of this strategy is broadening the options available to the students. The Senior Certificate Project is investigating structural changes to certification and alternatives to current tertiary entrance requirements.  
  • March - Everything you need to know about starting a business in Queensland from the Department of State Development includes information on legal requirements, seminars and tips for success.  
  • February - Public Toilet Map - great idea but you don't want to be presented with a map of Australia when you're in a hurry. The printable travel maps that list all the toilets on the way would be very useful for travellers. 
  • February - Crikey.com offers an independent voice on current issues and aims to "fill the gaps the Australian media seem unable or unwilling to fulfil" 
  • February - Emoticons are used in email and on chat groups to add or alter meaning - here is one view of what various emoticons mean. You'll also find a list of common email abbreviations on the same site.  Use with caution to avoid misunderstandings.
  • January - Lighthouses of Australia with photos, technical information and history of lighthouses all around Australia. 

  • January - AMOL's guide to museums and galleries includes databases of museums and collections, museum craft information and discussion groups, museum sector calendar of events, and many other resources.  
  • January - National Archives of Australia includes recently released 1971 Cabinet Records, a wealth of information for family historians, WWI and WWII Service Records, research guides, teachers kits and classroom ideas and a calendar of exhibitions.

  • November - Schoolies Week - School's out for students completing the final year of high school on November 16. Many teenagers celebrate at the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast or Stradbroke Island. These sites include what's on and information to make sure you survive. 
  • October - The human wealth of nations. The speech delivered by the chairman of News Corporation Rupert Murdoch at the Keith Murdoch Memorial Oration in Melbourne yesterday. "Without urgent support for our centers of learning, Australia is at risk of becoming something worse than globally disadvantaged: it is no exaggeration to say we are threatened with global irrelevance."  
  • October A Nation of Thugs. On 27 September 2001 Chris Sidoti, National Spokesperson for the Human Rights Council of Australia, addressed a seminar on Refugees, Gangs and Racial Punishment at Sydney University hosted by Pluto Press. In a paper entitled A Nation of Thugs, Mr Sidoti criticised the major parties approach to asylum seekers in the run up to the federal elections later this year, accusing Australias national leaders of turning their backs on the highest qualities of leadership, vision and humanity shown by their predecessors. What they are doing is damaging us. It is destroying our hopes and aspirations, our self esteem, our sense of honour, our compassion and our decency. Our leaders, from both major political groupings, are turning us into a nation of thugs.

  • May - The Universal Currency Converter is an invaluable tool for planning your travels, international purchases and investments.

  • May - Didjeridu Australia has excellent photos and information on local birds and frogs, native plants and wetlands, bush tucker and bush heritage. (Note: new link - if you've had trouble with this one, please try again)
  • May - QROTI - The unofficial site for railways in Queensland, includes Brisbane suburban timetables and photos of stations, state-wide train trips and freight information. (Here is the official QR site.)  
  • April - ABC Public Record - from the ABC, a guide to the latest issues, events and debates in Australia. The site includes a Federal Election section with news, opinions, forums and webcasts on issues leading up to the federal election to be held later this year.
  • April - Search for Australian Place Names locate any town in Australia with Australia's national mapping agency
  • April - Australia Post site includes a postcode search, and a postage calculate for local and international letters and parcels.  It's a very red web site - to match the post vans.
  • March - State Library of Queensland Time Walks - interactive journeys through Queensland's history using materials from the collections of the John Oxley Library of Queensland History
  • March - Product Recalls Australia - a government web site providing information on recalls for food, consumer products, cars, agricultural and veterinary chemicals and therapeutic goods
  • The Making of Queensland - Trails to Federation. ABC Local Radio in Queensland in conjunction with the Queensland Heritage Trails Network have produced this 250 part series on Federation.
